Description
The helical spiral cutter head is the best ever upgrade you can make for your thickness planer.
This particular cutter head is machined to fit perfectly in your Makita 2012NB model and it consists of a total of 48 extremely sharp carbide indexable blade inserts. The carbide blades are made in Germany. Every time you rotate the individual carbide insert, you are instantly getting a brand new edge. One edge would normally remain sharp for 3 years, so all four edges after three 90 degree rotations should easily last for a decade. Now that is something! Also when you hit a nail, you can simply rotate a single damaged carbide insert edge, and you are good to go, no more waiting for your new online purchased blades to arrive or rushing to your nearest tool store hoping they have it in stock.

I upgraded to helical head on Makita 2012NB, because I wanted to be able to get the same surface quality both from the jointer as well as from the thickness planer.
The installation took me few hours, because it was my first time, and the results are superb. The surface is lustre smooth when you look at it, and silky smooth when touched, no sanding needed after this cutter head.
The machine is noticeably less noisy, and the load on the motor is nearly the same as with the straight knives.
Nobody will ever return to using the straight knives cutterhead, having used the helical spiral cutterhead.

I received and installed the cutter head thursday 7/10/2021, the only issue i had was having to remove and disregard the circlip on the outer end, otherwise very straight forward it took around 2 hours , very happy with the result, very smooth finish and so much quieter great product.

I just opened the box, removed all contents, and cannot find directions for installation. Are they downloadable somewhere on the internet? The cutter head looks very elegant and I am eager to put it to use. Marvin

I would make this same upgrade again. The Tiger Tools Pro carbide cutter head for the Makita 2012NB has 48 carbide four-sided cutters where competitor brands have fewer,–40 on one brand I checked. Installation does require reshaping the planer frame casting mounting hole through which the cutter head is inserted. This worried me, but the enlargement went very well. You may notice a greater power drag on the planer motor. I attribute the extra power draw to the inherently less sharp carbide versus the steel alloy used in the factory-supplied cutters. Be that as it may–some reviewers disagree–the actual planed wood surface on my machine is now superior to that created by the stock Makita. I am pleased with my purchase.
